GOSHEN - Florence Irene Nafziger, 93, died Monday, April 9, 2012, at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born Oct. 13, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, Mont., to Christian and Lydia (Birkey) Nafziger, the fifth child of six siblings.
She is survived by her youngest brother, Mervin of Sun City, Ariz.; seven nieces and nephews, Carol Schweitzer of Salem Ore., LaDonna Cappilini of Meridian, Idaho, Dean Nafziger of San Antonio, Peggy Martin of LaJunta, Colo., Steven Nafziger of Pueblo Colo., Colette Hostetler of Muscatine, Iowa, and Jeanette Pyle of Litchfield Park, Ariz.; 17 great-nieces and -nephews; and nine great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Three brothers, Wilbert, Melvin and Howard; a sister, Ada; and a nephew, Bryon Nafziger, preceded her in death.
Florence spent most of her childhood and youth in Nampa, Idaho. Her mother passed away when Florence was 12. The weight of "lady of the house" fell on her shoulders at this early age. She graduated from Hesston Junior College and Goshen College as well as the nursing program in La Junta, Colo.
She served as a missionary nurse in India from 1946 to 1984. During this time, she helped establish a nursing school at Dhamtari Christian Hospital, where she taught nursing students for many years. In 1973, she concluded her work at the hospital in Dhamtari and transferred to the Graduate School for Nurses in Indore, India, where she served as administrator for two years and later helped teach nursing administration and education.
In 1984, she moved to Goshen where she spent her retirement years. Here she enjoyed companionship and fellowship with fellow retirees from work in India, as well as many cousins who lived in the area. Her love and prayers for India continued throughout her life. In 2000, Florence was recognized by Goshen College for her outstanding contribution to medical work in India.
During Florence's later years, Leroy and Maxine Yoder took complete care of her financial and medical arrangements and visited her regularly. Words cannot express the appreciation felt by Florence's family for these acts of Christian love and caring.

Life Story of F. Alice Newcomer May 31, 1934 - September 2, 2012
Fern Alice Zehr was born May 31, 1934 in Manson, Iowa, to Alvin and Ruth (Lehman) Zehr. She was the youngest daughter, joining older sisters Florence and Nelda. Alice grew up on a three different farms that her father rented near Manson. Since they had no boys in the family, she always had outdoor chores to do. Alice attended three different one room schools in her childhood and three years of high school at Barnum High School. She completed her last year of high school at Hesston Academy in Hesston, Kansas.
Alice's family had the practice of nightly devotions and regular church attendance. Alice learned to read her Bible at home and said she felt Jesus tugging at her heart. As a result, Alice confessed her sins and made a commitment to Jesus Christ at age ten. She was baptized in the Manson Mennonite Church by Bishop Simon Gingerich from Wayland, Iowa.
After graduating from Hesston Academy, Alice attended Hesston College for two years, receiving her Associates of Arts degree and returned to Iowa to teach school. After teaching for several years she moved to Goshen, Indiana, to attend Goshen College to complete her Bachelor's degree. Upon graduation, she taught third and fourth grades in the Jimtown school system near Elkhart for five years. She later went on to complete her Master's degree at Western Michigan University. She also worked at the Wakarusa Public Library for several years.
During her early teaching years, Alice met Marvin Newcomer at a young adult Mennonite fellowship meeting. After dating , they were married on November 24, 1960 at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church where Alice became a member. Their daughter Jill was born one snowy morning in February 25, 1965. Once Jill was born, she quit teaching. Their son Kelly was born September 3, 1968.
In 1971 Marvin and Alice started helping with a mission church, Fish Lake Mennonite church. They drove over every Sunday morning for three years. Marvin taught adults and Alice led singing and helped with summer vacation Bible schools. After three years, they returned to Yellow Creek Mennonite Church, where Alice was asked to be director of Christian education. She served in that capacity for seven years and also sang in a ladies quartet with Doris Reinhardt, Phyllis Kehr, and Marge Brandeberry. Over the years Alice taught children's Sunday school and vacation Bible school, most recently the two year old class. She also served as a Stephen Minister for seventeen years, while also serving as an Elder for several terms.
Alice enjoyed her growing family. In addition to Jill and Kelly, Alice and Marvin were blessed a wonderful in-laws: daughter in law, Carla and son-in-law Chris Erb, as well as six grandchildren, whom she was blessed to live long enough to know them into their teen and young adult years. Alice was married to Marvin for forty four years of marriage before his passing on November 6, 2004. After Marvin's death, Alice continued to serve in many capacities at church, as well as with Mennonite Central Committee and IU Health Goshen Hospital and knit prayer shawls. She also traveled all over the United States with her dear friend and walking companion, Marge Detweiler.
After the sudden onset of illness three months ago, Alice Newcomer courageously faced death in her last months, preparing herself and others for her passing. She died early Sunday afternoon, September 2, 2012, at Greencroft Healthcare where she had lived since August 17. She was seventy eight years old.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin and her parents Alvin and Ruth Zehr. She is survived by a daughter, Jill, married to Chris) Erb of New Paris; a son, Kelly, married to Carla Newcomer of Zionsville; six grandchildren, Spencer, Sara and Austin Erb all of New Paris; and Hannah, married to Logan Campbell, Allison and Emily Newcomer, all of Zionsville; and two sisters, Florence (Roman) Hershberger and Nelda (Irvin) Nussbaum, both of Goshen.
Memorial contributions may be made to Yellow Creek Mennonite Church Building Fund or Mennonite Central Committee. Praise be to God for Alice's love Jesus and her service in Jesus' name. She was a mentor to many and will be missed. KBC 08/05/12
